Yokosuka Microwave Tower
3 Years Have Gone By...
April 10, 2007
I hadn't thought about it until today, but I just realized that it's been over three years since I put up the Yokosuka Microwave site. It seems to me that I started it only a few months ago. Where does the time go?
Since the beginning, we have managed to locate 16 former shipmates. I guess that's not so bad considering how long ago our Yokosuka experience was. I have managed to talk on the phone to most of you and amazingly everybody sounds the same, even though most of us show the effects of the years that have gone by on our faces, "and" waistlines. :o)
Well, maybe we'll find a few more in the next 3 years. Missing in action that I personally knew are Rodney Heslip, David Simpson, Don White, The two Radiomen Steve and Craig, Rex Lawyer, Brian Meeks, the Yeoman bodybuilder, David Luksich, Warren Mccleary, the guy I went to C school with at Great Lakes and was stationed at Atsugi who smoked a pipe and wore glasses, Jimmy Brown, and Mr. Carlson.
Of course I would have liked to talk to Joe Moskal... who can forget Joe?
Steve,

The purpose of intentional mispellings is so the search engines
will pick them up in case someone mispells a name when doing
a search.
The following was added by Terry Swanson November 18, 2007
A group of 8 ETNs arrived in Yokosuka in April 1968 and were the first group to work with Rick Bowhay. The USN rushed us out of Great Lakes for an urgent 2 year duty assignment and would not allow us any leave before we left. When we go to NAVCOMMSTA, nobody even knew we were coming and they had us sweeping out the caves behind NAVCOMMSTA for the first two weeks--HURRY-UP-AND-WAIT! We attended the NEC radio school in Mukiagarawa and then some stayed in Yokosuka and others moved to different Kanto Plain Microwave sites:
Dennis Sharon assigned to Atsugi
Gary Kaplan went to Negishi
James Dalenburg went to Negishi
Todd Wilkinson went to Kamiseia (see additional comment below)
Terry (Tiny) Swanson ETN2 at Yokosuka until 11/68 transfered to Negishi and was at Kisarazu Microwave site for 2 months in the middle of Yakuza country
Ishigaki san was the NEC rep/engr at Yokosuka until July 1968. They were still troubleshooting and testing the signals levels until about June 1968, when everything was finally FIVERS at the FCC17 patch panel.
Todd Wilkinson and Terry Swanson were assigned to NAVCOMMSTA Kodiak, Alaska after leaving Japan and worked at their microwave facility (FCC17 & FRC84 7 GHZ radio). When we left Kodiak we drove our motorcycles (1969 Honda 450 and 750--mine) down the ALCAN highway before it was paved to Seattle. It was nine days of rain and snow. From there Todd road to Milwaukee where he married Marilyn and I road down to San Diego to the USS Constellation. Todd had five children and worked as an air traffic controller. In 1976 while driving home from work he was T-Boned by a drunk driver in a van and died.
Others I remember at Negishi in 1968-70 are:
Chief Widman
Chief Navarro
Larry Francis Utt
James Dalenburg
Gary Kaplan
Steve Lathrop ETN2 (in charge of site in 1968)
Harold (Smitty) Smith
Terry (Tiny) Swanson
End of Terry Swanson post.
